Shortcakes Take:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated, powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  • Fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced- hulled means to remove the green leafy and white core from the top of the strawberry, leaving only the red, fleshy part. Sliced means to cut into thin flat pieces.
  • Sugar (to taste, for macerating strawberries) allowing the sugar to draw out the juices from the strawberries.

Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Learn to make Strawberry Shortcakes:

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C)
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour in the milk and vanilla extract. Stir nicely but be careful not to overmix.
  • Turn the dough out onto a flat-floured surface and gently knead it a few times.
  • Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness.
  • Use a round biscuit cutter to cut out shortcakes and place them on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for about 12-15 minutes or until the shortcakes are golden brown.
  • Allow them to cool.
  • While the shortcakes are baking, macerate/coat the sliced strawberries in sugar for about 15-20 minutes to release their juices.

Whipped Cream:

  • Beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together until thick.
  • To assemble, split the shortcakes in half horizontally. Spoon some macerated strawberries onto the bottom half, top with a dollop of whipped cream, and then place the other half of the shortcake on top.
  • Garnish with additional strawberries and a swirl of whipped cream on top.
